Oktoberfest in Helen Georgia (Everything You Need to Know)

Curious about celebrating Oktoberfest in Helen Georgia?

Helen is THE spot to enjoy Oktoberfest activities in Georgia. The town goes all out celebrating this German tradition. Because I live in Atlanta, I regularly pop over to Helen for Oktoberfest, and it never disappoints.

Oktoberfest starts September 12th, 2026 and runs through November 1st. If you want to experience the kick off events, go on opening day for the Oktoberfest parade and tapping of the keg.

Here are all my best tips to help you plan your visit to Helen’s annual Oktoberfest.

Helen Georgia restaurants

Book your stay early if possible

Helen accommodations fill up quickly during the Oktoberfest season. The best rental and hotel prices are available months out. I’ve found cabins within walking distance last minute, but it starts to get tough at least a month out, especially with a bigger group.

Stay walking distance from town

The streets get crowded and parking is limited. Stay within walking distance of town if you plan to be downtown most of the time. Of course, there are many beautiful vacation rentals a little further off, and these are great if you don’t want to hear music late into the night.

Pro travel tip: Viking Vacation Rentals has three luxury suites walking distance from Helen. This is my full breakdown of what it’s like to stay at their luxury Yonah Suite with mountain views.

Be prepared for the prices

Helen is the third most visited town in Georgia, and the price of a meal and a beer can add up quickly. Just be mentally prepared for this. It’s part of the bargain, but it’s nice to know ahead of time.

If you plan to prepare some meals at home, vacation rentals with kitchens are a great option. There is a fantastic little grocery store in town, Betty’s Country Store. They are well stocked, and pretty much one of the only groceries around.

Pack for cooler weather

Georgia starts to cool off around mid to late October. And since Helen is tucked into the North Georgia Mountains, temperatures dip at night. Pack layers and be prepared for swings in temperature. Really, October can be both surprisingly warm, or cool.

Visit all the different Oktoberfest venues

Helen goes all out for Oktoberfest, and it’s so fun to just go with the flow and explore.

If you want to be at the start of it all when the celebration kicks off, go to the Fussen Biergarten at Helen Festhalle. This is where they tap the official keg to commence the festivities.

Pro Travel Tip: Visit Helen’s official website for the start times.

Make time to visit Helen’s many bars and restaurants along Main Street. Try German beer, listen to German-style bands and live music, and generally just have a great time.

Troll Tavern during Helen Oktoberfest

Hang out along the Chattahoochee River

Sit out at Troll Tavern, Paul’s Margarita Deck, or one of the other restaurants along the river. The Chattahoochee cuts through Main Street, and you can catch people floating the river even in late September.

Dress up for the ocassion

You can rent a German-themed outfit in Helen, and tons of people do it! When you walk around you’ll spot Lederhosen and Dirndl everywhere.

Get a costume in advance or rent one in town. There are costume contests on certain Saturdays, and Halloween night. I haven’t done this yet, but you can bet I’m already planning it out for this year. Imagine the great photo ops!

Dig into German food and drink

Don’t skip trying the food and drink in town. Helen’s restaurants and beer gardens are stocked up on pretzels, bratwurst, and German beers.

Helen’s Oktoberfest is also known for stein-holding contests. Traditional polka dancing is another big draw, just follow the polka music and you’ll find the dance floor!

Explore beyond town

I swear I discover a new hidden gem every time I visit Helen. For example, the Unico/Helen Trail leads straight from town all the way to Unico State Park and Lodge, a fun hiking opportunity if you want an escape from the festivities.

Make a bit of time to get outside of town and do some hiking, visit a winery or meadery, or explore the surrounding areas.
