Rock City Gardens is a sprawling 14 acres of trails through narrow caverns, massive rocks, and spectacular overlooks at the top of Lookout Mountain.
I quickly fell in love with the destinations whimsical sights and sounds.
So pack a snack, bring your walking shoes and your camera, and let’s explore the fantastical world of Rock City.
Your whimsical adventure awaits
It was a crystal clear day in June when I visited Rock City. That meant we could see the seven surrounding states from Lover’s Leap: North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, and Virginia.
So many different observation points feature panoramic views. The path starts off at Grand Corridor Trail and leads into the heart of the gardens, branching off we went along.

The Walk-A-Long bridge (an adventurous wooden suspension bridge) was a highlight. We waited until it was fully clear to walk across, otherwise it would have been a bit too wobbly for me.
But oh, the views!
The Best Views near Chattanooga? I think yes.

The narrow passage walkways were so unique! Needle’s Eye right near the main entrance was one of my favorites right away. These impressive natural rock formations are thousands of years old.
A bit reminiscent of The Narrows in Zion Canyon. Fat Man’s Squeeze was especially adrenalin inducing. Totally worth it to come out to this overlook and waterfall.

Stone bridges and low hanging caverns brought us out to Observation Point. Along the way, we kept making little discoveries, like the colorful stain glass windows in Rainbow Hall, or the carved stone elf that seemed to hold up the entire edge of a passage.

A bit about Rock City’s fairytale theme
Frieda Carter, the garden’s cofounder, was a true lover of European Folklore (you can read all about it here). As we walked along we spotted hidden gnomes off in the trees and tucked into rock crevices.
That fairytale theme carries through Fairyland Caverns and gift shop merchandise. It’s an eclectic, nostalgic experience. And Frieda made it all happen!
She took string and marked the original trails. Planted wildflowers and imported gnomes. And all of this during the Great Depression. All in all, it was fascinating to learn the history, and we appreciated the many signs that let us dive deeper into the lore.

We took hours to explore, and easily could have stayed half a day on longer. Themed restaurants, a fudge kitchen, magical little crystal shops pop up as you walk, waiting to be explored.

A live musician played folk music as we walked out to Lover’s Leap. With so many trails to explore and little stores to discover, we were ooh-ing and ahh-ing like kids making new discoveries (can you tell we didn’t check the map?).

Head to The Hall of The Mountain King and Fairyland Caverns to mid-century storybook imagination come alive.
