Arriving at Viking Hilltop Suites
The Yonah and Sunset Suites reside at the top of a private drive right above Helen, Georgia. When we arrived, we entered through a private gate with Viking Hilltop Suites displayed clearly above the entrance.
Arriving at the Yonah Suite atop the hill, we parked in the gravel parking space clearly marked for our suite.
Check-in and First Impressions
“Wow “ was the word that came to mind immediately upon arrival. And I found myself continuing to say wow as we unpacked, explored the suite, and took in the incredible views.
I instantly felt relaxed amidst the harmonious decor and the flow of the open spaces accented with soft lighting. The suite also smelled amazing with soft hints of orange and jasmine.
About Our Host
Our host Danielle provided clear directions the day before arrival, so finding the suite was effortless.
Danielle was incredibly responsive throughout our booking and visit. In addition, the suite had clear signage for wifi and check-out guidelines.
A comprehensive guide book on the counter gave important information about the suite as well as pages of recommendations for our visit to Helen.
Our host also left a beautiful gift for us in the fridge – a bottle of Lamarca Prosecco and a charcuterie tasting board. Such a wonderful way to kick off the weekend!
Viking Hilltop Suites: The Yonah Suite
The Yonah Suite and Sunset Suite are two-person suites at the top of the hill, with beautiful views of the Helen below.
The two suites share a connected wall, yet feel entirely private. Yonah Suite overlooks Helen and the treetops. Sunset Suite overlooks the scenic forest landscape.
Private parking, balconies, fire pits, and windows create a sense of seclusion as though you have the hilltop to yourself.
Yonah Suite Interior Spaces
During the day the suite is filled with natural light. An open floor concept, raised ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling windows create a very relaxed and romantic ambiance.
Private Balcony
Our private balcony became a favorite element of the Yonah Suite. The suite’s thoughtful layout immerses you in nature with the balcony offering a front row view.
I loved sitting on the balcony for sunrise, watching the sun light up the trees and hilltop.
Serene Sitting Areas
The front sitting area faces impressive floor-to-ceiling windows, with plush chairs positioned towards the view. A meditation mat in the corner caught my attention immediately. Touches like this throughout the suite further elevated the experience for us.
Full Kitchenette
Yonah Suite is fully equipped with kitchen essentials and thoughtful extras. I’d stopped at the grocery before our drive to Helen so we could prepare breakfasts and lunches at the suite. We easily found everything from a wine opener to a lovely set of pots and pans.
The open concept shelving displayed a sleek four set of plates, bowls, cups, and wine glasses.
The kitchen is well stocked with Keurig coffee machine, water kettle, and everything needed for a great cup of coffee.
A stunning wooden slab island at the kitchen’s center created a picturesque space for meals.
Best of all, the kitchenette overlooks the windows just past the front sitting area for mealtime ambiance.
Spacious Living Room
Just inside the entrance of the suite is the living room. The cozy L-shaped couch created space to relax and watch television, or simply soak in the outdoor scenery.
Throughout our stay I appreciated how many sitting areas were woven into the interior, each offering a different glimpse of the cabin and forest.
Luxurious Bedroom Loft
Up 4 steps from the living room is the inviting bedroom space overlooking the rest of the suite.
This layout allowed us to relax on the comfortable king bed to watch tv and spot squirrels through the windows.
Small details shine through in the bedroom space. Subtle lighting illuminates from beneath when stepping off of the bed, and wooden side tables and a trio of hanging lamps accent the room.
I immediately fell in love with the backlit mirror (IYKYK this is the best lighting for makeup application) above a small table perfect for getting ready. The suite provided a blow dryer and counter space beneath the mirror.
Private Bathroom
The bathroom includes a luxurious two-person shower, dual sinks, and shelf storage below a large mirror. On the left wall we discovered small shelves stocked with hand towels, washcloths, and complimentary toiletries.
The space felt clean and well stocked when we arrived. There were even sunscreens, bug spray, and a waterproof phone pouch stowed below the sinks waiting for their next adventure
We ended up using both the sunscreen and pouch for our tubing excursion on Saturday, they were so handy!
Yonah Suite Facilities and Experience
We quickly discovered we could easily spend our weekend at the suite without needing to leave the property. Once we drove through the gate we were whisked into a private world above town and didn’t want to leave.
Fire Pit and S’mores Roasting
The cozy private fire pit was just the recipe to slow down and enjoy the moment with the evening view, good company, and the sound of birds and wind through the pines.
Our suite included barbecue and s’mores tool kits, so after securing marshmallows in town at Betty’s Country Store we used the provided firewood to build a small campfire.
From the Yonah Suite the fire pit faces South East towards Helen and Chattahoochee National Forest.
We used the two Adirondack chairs to recline and sip a glass of wine while waiting for the perfect roast on our marshmallows.
Reading and Relaxing
I was drawn to the suite’s many unique sitting arrangements. The cozy orange sitting chairs beside the window, the wicker porch chairs facing the woods, and the comfy couch with pillows and blankets each held their own elegant touches.
The spaces are set up for two people to relax and unwind together. Or, to find their favorite quiet corners to dig into a good book.
Movies in Bed
The bed created an ideal spot for a cozy movie night, especially on a quiet evening in the fall or winter on a rainy evening. Also, the suite provides access to popular streaming services like Netflix and Apple TV.
Spaces to Get Ready and Store Belongings
Both the mirror station and bathroom were perfect for two people to get ready for the day or for an evening date night in Helen.
There was plentiful space for both my fiance and I to get ready without vying for real estate in front of the sink or mirror.
Also, the bedroom closet is equipped with an iron, hangers, and enough space for stowing bags and belongings.
Downtown Helen Georgia Experiences
Viking Hilltop Suites are within walking distance from Main Street in Helen, Georgia.
If you’re staying in one of the hilltop suites you can easily park in the free parking lot just inside of the Viking Luxury Rentals gated property. Then, it’s just a few minutes’ walk to town.
Places to Visit Near Viking Hilltop Suites
The charming Bavarian-themed town of Helen has a bit of everything for food and shopping. It’s easy to spend a weekend exploring the downtown and surrounding waterfall hiking trails and wineries.
With a bit of research we discovered that Helen is the third most visited city in Georgia after Atlanta and Savannah. When we visited in mid-August the town was filled with visitors late into the evening.
Shopping and Dining in Downtown Helen
Main Street is lined with unique shops geared towards visitors. You’ll find t-shirts and souvenirs, candy stores, quirky themed gifts, coffee shops, and tasting rooms.
Local restaurants and bars line Main Street and the Chattahoochee River and are quite lively. Dining options include everything from bars and eateries to fine dining.
Our host recommended the highly rated Bangkok House and Campfire, both in downtown. We also tried the Troll Tavern on Saturday evening while we explored downtown.
Chattahoochee River Tubing
If you’re visiting Helen during the summer don’t miss out on floating down the Chattahoochee River on an intertube. We rented tubes from Helen Tubing, but there are multiple companies for gear rentals. The process was very simple – book your tube online or in person, and walk right out into the river.
The water was calm and refreshing on the hot August day. We enjoyed the relaxed pace of the river, and didn’t mind the crowd on the water during the busy weekend. I would recommend allotting 2-3 hours to float down the river without a rush.
Award Winning Wineries
Our host kindly recommended Yonah Mountain Vineyard, Serenity Cellars, and Cottage Courtyard for their wines and spectacular views. We also discovered Habersham Winery just outside of town beside Nora Mill Granary.
Review my guide on 10 Helen Georgia Wineries and Vineyards to visit, for a full list of venues within 20 minutes of Helen.
Cozy Coffee Shops
Yonah Coffee Company is a cute shop in town that we passed by. Meanwhile, JumpinGoat Coffee Roasters makes fantastic locally roasted coffees just outside of downtown beside Nora Mill Granary. We enjoyed the freshly brewed hot coffee and iced coffee on our drive out of town.
Local Landmarks
We visited Betty’s Country Store to soak up the general store feel and grab marshmallows. We also visited Nora Mill Granary, established in 1876. At the mill we picked up a couple gifts, and I was very tempted by the dozens of delicious packaged baking mixes like biscuits, pancakes, and breads.
Epic Helen Georgia Hikes
Helen offers many beautiful hikes in surrounding forests. Two that stood out to us were Mount Yonah and Minnehaha Falls.
Mount Yonah (Yonah translates to bear in Cherokee) is a beautiful hike about 2-miles straight uphill (expect 3-hours round trip). Our host shared that it is absolutely breathtaking from the top, and well worth it. We didn’t make it on this trip, so it will be on our list for next time.
Minnehaha Falls is an easy 0.4 mile round trip hike to a beautiful fanned out waterfall. Watch out for some steep parts of the trail, and be aware that parking is limited as this is a popular hike.
Viking Hilltop Suites: The Ideal Weekend Escape
Helen is full of places we want to explore, including hikes and wineries we’ve earmarked to visit. The Viking Hilltop Suites and Yonah Cabin were a perfect jumping off point to our adventures and a relaxing oasis for our return after a day of exploring.
This romantic space is the ultimate retreat if you’re looking to escape into the North Georgia Mountains, yet stay a stone’s throw away from Helen.
We felt so relaxed throughout our visit, and would absolutely book another weekend in the future.
